Cottesloe Sculptures by the Sea, 2013

I don't know about you, but this week is out of control at my end. So much to do! Not enough time! Things I remember in the middle of the night! It amuses me that every aspect of my work life can suddenly get busy in the space of 24 hours, when the law of averages would suggest that (say) I don't need to revise and resubmit papers and deal with ethics committees and deal with students all in the same day.

Fortunately, in the midst of the whirlwind, there have been calm moments too. Some came on Tuesday evening when we visited the 2013 Sculptures by the Sea display in Cottesloe, one of Perth's coastal suburbs and beaches. Some of you may remember my 2012 Sculptures by the Sea post.

With apologies to those of you where it is still winter-y, and general apologies for the overcast lighting, here are some photos from our evening visit.

These were like wind-powered flutes...

If you didn't already know this was Australia...this sign would give it away!

A follow-up to a red boy of the same artist last year.

What calm moments have been happening in your week?

  3. All of those sculptures are really cool! I like the 4th one up from the bottom the best. I hope that your week calms down. I hate thinking about things I need to remember to do when I am sleeping.

    1. I love that one too (the fourth from the bottom). And I know - sleep should be quarantined from worry!

  4. Love your photos of the sculptures, I do remember your post about this from last year. What a shame we weren't around for this event, I would have loved to have seen it! Hope you have a quieter end to the week and a relaxing weekend.

    1. It is a shame you weren't here for this - but at least you have seen the beach and can picture the location :-)

  5. I almost hid in the bathroom and cried today. Only an out-of-the-blue wonderful message form a fella saved me. So yes. I understand. Also it's still snowing and it makes me feel sick.

The blue cast to these photos is increasing my melancholy.

  6. How cool! Those are such creative sculptures. I wish I could do that. Love the "wind-powered" flutes.

    1. I wish I could too - alas, I have no creativity at all! I can only admire others.

  8. I have finally had a bit more time this week to do things and it is still crazy here but at least I managed to get to the pool alone which is my oasis - I remember last year's well and am glad you found time to go back to this year's display. I love the crocodile.

    1. I loved it too, especially seeing it from afar - quite a funny sight with people clustered around.

I am glad you made it to the pool in your week. Those seemingly small things can make a world of difference!

  9. How beautiful is that beach. gorgeous. Some of the sculptures have travelled from the Sydney ( Bondi) sculptures by the sea. Nice to see they can get used again

    2. I hadn't realised some had come over from Sydney (we didn't buy the booklet that would no doubt include details like that!) but it is nice to think of them travelling the country.

I'm glad the photos helped you calm down too Joanne!

  10. Oi, what is it with this week? I actually missed a phone meeting on Thursday... just was busy and completely forgot about it! I can blame starting to feel sick, being caught up with teaching, but I have never just forgotten about important meetings before!

I could probably do with a trip to the beach and some art, actually. We have a similar event in Townsville called Strand Ephemera, but it only happens every second year. I'll have to see if this is the year!

    1. Oh no :( That is horrible. I'm sorry you've been sick too - I hope you're getting over that. Sickness on top of busyness is not a good mix at all

I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is your year for Strand Ephemera!

  12. It is amazing how quickly life can descend into chaos - that happens here quite often. I adore your Sculpture By The Sea photos - I have been to the Bondi to Tamarama one in Sydney once, and I loved it. I have great memories of going there with a friend who is now entrenched in family life with no time to do that any more, so I treasure it.

    1. It's lovely that you can have those memories with your friend. I'm sure she treasures them too, if she's now caught up in things that don't allow such excursions!

  13. Oh what a divine exhibition. I've had a lovely calm weekend which has been just the antidote needed after a very long busy weekend.
