In my kitchen - May 2014

I am linking this post in to Celia's monthly In My Kitchen event at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial.

In my kitchen, there is a new cookbook! I won it via a giveaway hosted by Janet of The Taste Space. The win was a delightful surprise, because I had completely forgotten about entering the giveaway.

I am delighted with the book, because I want to make just about every recipe it contains. Some particular highlights include kale and soba noodles with a ginger chilli sauce; chilli, peanut and coconut soup; and homemade vegan ice cream including a raw maple pecan variety.

In my kitchen, there are also more mundane items. Sometimes, though, mundane is still exciting. Yellow and red beans from my local markets provide one such example. The yellow beans were comparable to the standard green variety, but I think the red ones were "bush bean borlotti 'red rooster'". I have had borlotti beans before, but never out of their original pods!

In my kitchen, there has been porridge. In principal, porridge is about as mundane as you can get. In practice, it holds great appeal for me at this time of year. After 6+ months of temperatures that are too warm for porridge, sitting down to a hot bowl of it seems cozy and comforting and incredibly satisfying.

In my kitchen, there have been some more products from Fremantle. In fact, I am gearing up for another Fremantle post. This carrot, coconut and beetroot salad came from a market stall and was beautifully vibrant.

In my kitchen, there is some Ikea chocolate! I don't usually visit Ikea for my chocolate supplies, but this 70% cocoa block was roughly half the price of equivalent supermarket brands. It's tasty, too.

In my kitchen, there are not any other Ikea purchases. I visited simply to browse, with the goal of identifying possible furniture for our new place in the UK. Trying to browse Ikea on a Sunday is not something I would recommend. The chocolate was necessary for recovery as much as anything else.

Last but not least, in my kitchen there are low key preparations for our upcoming move to London. Our original departure date (mid to late May) may be slightly delayed, because we are waiting on Mr Bite's spousal visa to arrive (sigh). Once it does, my kitchen and all surrounding rooms will be a hive of packing and sorting!

What is happening in your kitchen this month?

  2. Wonderful to "meet" you via IMK! Oh dear, Ikea on a Sunday (Saturday and Bank holidays) is best avoided at all costs! Good luck with the packing and the move - it's always a great opportunity to de-clutter.

  5. those beans are pretty, porridge sounds good to me this time of year (I have been enjoying it with stewed plums), and must check out ikea chocolate - almost went to ikea this week until I realised I could get the stuff I wanted elsewhere for similar prices and no other stuff to tempt me and take up time I didn't have.

    1. You were more sensible than I with the Ikea avoidance!! The chocolate did help though...

    1. How impressive that you are growing borlotti yourself. I bet the fresh beans taste even better home grown.

  7. Lucky you winning that cookbook!
we grew borlotti beans a couple of years ago. We didn't get a huge harvest but they were so pretty and tasty too.

    1. I can't believe it took me until now to even encounter them! I'm a convert now though - so much better than dried or tinned.

  9. I didn't realise you were heading to London so soon! I love the look of that cookbook and the vegan ice cream sounds really interesting. How much do I hate Ikea. It's so bad I've decided it's no longer worth the trek and then the grief of the shopping experience - hoards of people being funnelled around with no way out - and then you get to the checkout and you have to do it all yourself. Can't stand it xx

    1. Well, the precise sooness is a little bit up in the air! Fingers crossed it's soon though - although I say that knowing how much we still have yet to sort before going.

Your view on Ikea is very sensible. Mine was not!!

    1. I think an upcoming overseas move was responsible for the Ikea restraint ;) We do NOT need more things to pack!

  16. Kari, congratulations on your move to London! (Which you may be in the midst of it now... apologies for my crazy/busy schedule preempting timely commenting.) Sometimes I think folks underestimate the mundane... the stuff our daily lives are made of... it takes a keen eye and a well-honed sense of gratitude to discern the miracle and JOY in them. Thank you!
