In my kitchen - April 2013

I am linking this post in to Celia's monthly In My Kitchen event at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

In my kitchen, there are sugar snap peas snow peas (thank you, Hannah, for educating me!), another vegetable re-discovery thanks to Aussie Farmers Direct. The last re-discovery was corn on the cob.


I had forgotten, or perhaps never knew, how enjoyable these are. Crunchy, sweet, no preparation time, and good straight up, cold in salads, or warm in stir fries.


In my kitchen, there is a slight surplus of Nuun electrolyte tablets. 


I discovered these a few months back, a way of replenishing electrolytes on long runs without buying pre-prepared sugar and/or colour-filled sports drinks. You drop a tablet in your drink bottle and off you go.


I bought a single tube of lemon-lime flavour first, and then bought a multi-pack and a non-Nuun brand for comparison. I only realised afterwards that I now have enough to last me for at least the next year. I usually only use one tablet a week, and there are 12 tablets per tube, so...yes. Quite a lot.

I haven't tried the fruit punch or tropical flavours yet. I don't like grape overmuch, but love the lemon/lime and strawberry lemonade.

In my kitchen, there is a block of 85% cocoa Alter Eco Dark Blackout chocolate.


It arrived last Easter weekend and is one of the few Alter Eco flavours I hadn't yet tried. As with all other chocolates in this range, I like it a lot. I'd describe it as a cross between Koko Black's 80% dark chocolate and Lindt's 90% dark chocolate, which means that it carries notes of brownies, is surprisingly sweet, and is utterly delicious in the depth of chocolate tones.



In my kitchen, there are toasted coconut chips. I am a little horrified at myself for buying these (ingredient list: coconut, sugar) but they are good! They remind me a little of dried banana chips.



In my kitchen, there is red quinoa.


It actually tastes different to the white variety - nuttier, earthier, and almost slightly sweeter. I like this a lot, too.



In my kitchen, there is brazil-almond-cashew spread.



I'm not sure I could have picked it as different to regular almond or cashew spread, but it does have a certain extra oomph in flavour that straight almond butter doesn't.


In my kitchen, there is a green papaya.



I'm hoping to turn it into a salad reminiscent of this raw Thai papaya salad

In my kitchen, there are birthday preparations underway...which mean that I am off to ice a cake...

  1. Those electrolyte tablets look so pretty. And I love the name blackout chocolate . Would love to taste it. I haven't tasted much (any?) of such dark chocolate but was glad to buy 70% chocolate again this week after some 40% ones.and I don't buy sugar snap peas often enough

If you see Alter Eco around, I would recommend the brand without hesitation - I used to only see them in the Oxfam shops, but now they are in some of the fancier small independent supermarkets. They're a bit expensive but great for a treat, and the fair trade aspect helps with justifying the price. Not really an everyday treat though!

      I did like the electrolyte tablets all lined up :-)

    1. Thanks Jan - I think Nuun can be found at sports stores and cycling stores, as well as some outdoor shops. I bought my multipack at wiggle.co.uk though, as they were cheaper :-)

    1. It will come :-) And Nuun tablets are available at sports and outdoor shops I think - basically the electrolyte replenishment (potassium and sodium, mostly) that comes in sports drinks but just with the electrolytes, not everything else.

    1. Oh dear. I'm now dithering about what they are. I am sure the pack said sugar snap peas, but am also sure my memory is capable of being wrong. Searching for the difference is not helping and searching for pictures is generating images that look like mine under both titles! Perhaps everyone else is just as confused as me. You're usually right, so I will say you are right, and am editing the above to reflect my uncertainty :P

    2. When I do a google image search of snow peas, they look like this, and sugar snap peas come up as the rounded ones filled with large peas.

      I kind of am right... ;) (Unless there are parts of the world that simply call them differently, of course!)

You are definitely right :-) I think I was clinging to the few out of place images in each Google set to make myself feel better - and because while I really am not familiar with the peas I've posted here, I use the other sort (which I thought were snow peas but I know now are sugar snap) all the time and have always believed them to be snow and not sugar! The pea world is on its head.

Your kitchen is quite a fun place to be..May I come over? ;) I'd LOVE to try that dark chocolate...notes of brownies...you got me with that description hehe. almonds are my favorite, followed by cashews so the marriage of two in a jar sounds heavenly. I'm going to try making it today actually. I think I'm going to add some honey to make it a bit sweeter. I, too, prefer the red quinoa over the white ones, but I can get the latter for really cheap at Costco so that's what I always have on hand. From the picture, they do look like snow peas..but don't quote me on it. In my kitchen, I have LOTS and LOTS of whole grains that I'm dying to try!!

    1. Ooh, I love that you're going to make your own almond / cashew spread. Honey would be great in the mix too.

      Also, they are snow peas, Hannah above has educated me too - I was clearly ignorant of the pea differences!

  11. Your kitchen looks super yummy! You always make me crave chocolate. Lol. Those electrolyte tablets look very interesting. I'm not the biggest fan of sports drinks, so they may be the perfect alternative. My kitchen is currently full of tomatoes, oranges, and strawberries. :)

    1. Sorry about the chocolate craving challenges! Or not too sorry, because I think life is better with chocolate, but it is tricky if you don't have any to hand :P

      I'd look out for the electrolyte tablets if you're not into sports drinks (I'm not either) - they're really easy to use, cheaper, and have none of the sugar and colorings that go with the commercial sort. It's literally just the electrolytes and some flavor (with no calories).

  12. Thanks for the reminder about red quinoa, I haven't bought it for ages! I like to mix red and white quinoa together sometimes as the colour contrasts look pretty.

    I'm excited by the sight of the green papaya! Good luck with the salad recreating endeavours, I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

    1. Red and white quinoa together is a great idea - it would look gorgeous. I'll have to try that next. And yes, I was delighted to find a green papaya! I've been vaguely looking since our lunch and this is the first time I've spotted one.

  13. Kari, the electrolyte tablets sound interesting! And I just had a papaya salad yesterday - I've never made it, but they are very delicious! Snow peas are a favourite in Asian cooking, but we're still trying to grow them successfully! :)
