In my kitchen - April 2014

I am linking this post in to Celia's monthly In My Kitchen event at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial.

In my kitchen, there is So Good's new almond and coconut milk. I try to test new non-dairy milk products in order to update my non-dairy milk review table, and this one was a delightful discovery. I actually enjoy it plain, which is very unusual for me with milk. While it is sweetened, it is also lower in sugar than So Good's regular almond milk.

The downside? It does contain carrageenan. It's getting harder and harder to avoid that ingredient in commercial milk alternatives.

In my kitchen, there is 90% cocoa Lindt chocolate! It seems it has finally hit Australian shores, and I was extremely excited to find it in the supermarket last weekend.

I was pleased to confirm that, as per my first impressions, it still tastes of brownies to me.

In my kitchen, there have been lots of tofu-containing bowls. I am definitely back in a tofu phase (not that I ever left one really). I am also in a quinoa and broccoli phase.

In my kitchen, there has been brown basmati rice cooked with cinnamon and nutmeg. I've been enjoying it cold with blueberries. I imagine it would be delicious with apple too.

In my kitchen, there is my favourite coconut ice cream flavour yet: sticky date and tamarind. To me, it actually tastes a bit like paw-paw. As I really like paw-paw, this is a good thing.

Delicious.

Visible from my kitchen are some new plants. With the weather moving into autumn mode, it was time to dig out the sun-scorched (dead!) summer plants and freshen up the courtyard.

There are some supposedly hardy purple bushes...

New chives in various pots, including Marigold the Snail...

A spot of colour...

And some basil and parsley...

What is happening in your kitchen this month?

  1. Your herbs are about the same size as mine! It will be a while before there's a harvest! I love the look of your ice cream and I'll look for that brand here in Sydney. I have seen a lot of brands combining almond milk and coconut milk but I'm yet to try them xx

    1. We had such a good crop of parsley last year Charlie, and every bit of it died over summer! I don't think I am the best gardener :S I hope your herbs thrive quickly and do look out for the ice cream - it is delicious :)

  2. 90% Lindt is my fave chocolate ever! Luckily it's widely available in supermarkets here and frequently on offer. It's embarrassing how much I get through....
Interesting that you have So Good non-dairy milks over there. Their soy milk was sold here for years but then suddenly disappeared.
I haven't tried coyo ice cream yet. It's just so expensive I never exceed in talking myself into it. I will do some time though!

    1. I discovered the 90% Lindt when we were in London in 2012 :) I brought back lots but ate it quickly!

I'm interested to hear you had So Good for a while - they're an Australian brand and for quite a long time were our only dairy free alternative option (and the master brand, Sanitarium, the only veggie product option). I wonder what happened in the UK!

  3. your garden is looking like you have put quite some investment into it considering you wont have much time with it left - I must try the 90% chocolate - sounds a bit intense for me but I love brownies so there is always a chance I will love it - we are always in a broccoli phase - can't get enough of it - but need more tofu in my life

    1. I'd be really interested to know how you find the 90% cocoa if you do try it - I expected it to be too bitter but find it somehow sweeter / more pleasant than the 70% / 85%. Odd!

The garden replanting was, in part, out of recognition that renting our place might be easier if it didn't have a dead looking courtyard ;) I'm hoping we can use some of the herbs before we go too though.

  4. Sticky date and tamarind?! That's making me wish I lived in Australia. I'm fairly certain I can't get that brand in the US, but that combination sounds wonderful!

    1. If it helps, the coconut ice cream you do get costs about one-third of ours ;) It is a great flavour though!

    1. Truthfully? I'm kind of glad to discover one thing we have that you don't! But, because I like to share, I really hope you get it soon too :)

  8. Tamarind and sticky date coconut icecream? Wow...that's a perfect post Thai or Malaysian meal dessert! Hope the garden all grows well - that basil is already looking very healthy! :)

    1. Thanks Celia! I hope it grows too - I don't have the best track record with gardening after recent summers :S

  9. I am so up for the chocolate and icecream! Tofu gets a bad rap, but I am not sure why - I like it. Marigold the Snail is cute.

  10. Will have to try the almond coconut milk- have you tried the coco-quench pure harvest brand? It's pretty good, can't remember whether it has the carrageenan though. And that ice cream looks so good. I love that brand of ice cream, but a tad pricey...

    1. I keep meaning to get the coco-quench brand! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it as the reason for my tardiness is not liking the last coconut milk I had in the US (the memory has stuck in my mind!). I'll have to give it a go.

The coconut ice cream is ridiculously pricey. I have to be quite creative to justify it, and truthfully, I'm not really sure the creativity is in itself justified!

  11. G'day! Would LOVE to try that ice cream and always appreciate anyone who has a green thumb Kari!
Thanks for your kitchen view this month too!

    1. Thanks Sally! It's amazing that something so predominantly cocoa can taste so wonderful (or perhaps not amazing at all - cocoa is great stuff) :)

  13. Have you thought about making your own almond milk? It is really easy and that way you can avoid all the other things they put in it. You have reminded me that I need to replant my chives. I managed to kill mine over summer.

    1. I've made my own nut milks a few times, but about half of my milk use is at work, and I find it a bit harder making / taking the homemade versions there. I'd like to try harder at making it work though because I would much prefer to just drink homemade if I could.
