Two or so years ago, I encountered Linda McCartney's vegetarian sausages when at a barbecue with Mr Bite's family. Vegetarian sausages have always seemed a bit fake to me, although I do eat them on occasion. However, the Linda McCartney brand tasted entirely different to any variety I'd had before. I left the barbecue determined to track them down at the one Perth supermarket that supposedly stocked them.
Two years later, I still haven't visited that supermarket. However, I did recently discover them at another supermarket I visit on occasion. There were other varieties of the Linda McCartney range too, and on looking online, there are many other products that I would like to try if they appeared locally.
The ingredient list for these sausages isn't particularly inspiring, and it's difficult to know where the flavour comes from. Perhaps the lack of soy makes a difference, but whatever the reason, these do taste wonderful. They don't taste like meat, and they don't taste like fake vegetarian meat, and really the main thing I can say about them is that they taste good.
We had them last night when we needed an early dinner and I wanted something that wouldn't use the oven (too hot). They paired nicely with green salad and cold potatoes and lived up to my memories of two years earlier. I definitely prefer them to the other varieties of vegetable sausages I've tried.
Our early dinner was needed because last night also included an excursion to an outdoor film screening, run as part of the Perth International Arts Festival. The summer film festival has been running for years, so it is a bit embarrassing that I hadn't been to one of the screenings previously.
There are two locations showing films, one quite centrally located and one in the northern Perth suburbs. We went for the central option, which is enclosed within trees and located not far from the Perth river. We had hoped that the combination of trees and river might bring some cool temperatures, but alas, it was still 29'C when the movie finished at 10pm.
Temperature aside, I loved the setting and found the cloth, beach-style seats more comfortable than traditional movie theatre chairs.
The movie itself, Safety Not Guaranteed, was enjoyed by both of us and managed to blend drama, comedy, science fiction and romance in a way that worked surprisingly well (and no doubt increased the possible audience by covering so many categories!).
It might have been hot, but it was a lovely summer night all the same.
Have you tried anything from the Linda McCartney range?
Or seen many non-mainstream films?
I love vegies sausages and I love outdoor films - sadly I eat vegie sausages far more than I see outdoor film - actually looked at what is on today and couldn't find anything to grab me. We usually take a picnic which is fun but a bbq style meal has that outdoorsy feel to it!
ReplyDeleteI first had linda mccartney sausages in the uk and have always enjoyed them but I find some of her other products are too much faux meat (such as the lasagna)
I think next time (fingers crossed there is a next time!) we will take a picnic. We'd have liked to do that this time but were a bit disorganised and eating at home seemed simpler. That outdoorsy feel would be an added bonus for the night though :-)
DeleteI've only been game enough to try the the Linda McCartney sausages in the last couple of weeks and have been very impressed with their flavour too! I was very tentative about trying them as I haven't liked any other variety of veg sausage I've eaten. I've had them with onion gravy and also tomato sauce, both of which work well. I haven't tried any of the other Linda McCartney products yet...
ReplyDeleteDo you have many near you? I saw pies ('meat' and 'chicken' / vegetable) and sausage rolls but not anything fancier. I can't say the pies or sausage rolls appeal much so I may stick with the sausages for now - will be interesting to hear if you do try anything else.
DeleteI have only ever tried turkey sausage, but that sausage looks really good! :) I love the idea of outdoor films! :) When my parents were young, drive-in movies were pretty popular. My dad used to go all of the time!
ReplyDeleteI have never been to a drive in movie but Mr Bite and I were talking about them just the other day! I think they would be fun to try if only they were still around.
DeleteI LOVED those sausages when I lived in Ireland. Can't find them here though :(
ReplyDeleteMaybe one day they'll reach your shores :(
DeleteGreat way to spend an evening. I just wish the weather was reliable enough here to have more open air cinema. I've never really understood vegetarian sausages, it seems such a contradiction in terms! However my vegetarian friends all love these sausages which are, of course, very readily available here. GG
ReplyDeleteThey are a bit of a contradiction in terms, I will grant that :-) Some of them are pretty appalling too.
DeleteWe are fortunate that even if it's hot, we can still get outside in the evenings. Definitely an Australian thing more than an English one!
I would be up to trying those sausages if they ever "come to town." But I doubt it, we don't even have Field Roast. Coincidentally I saw Safety Not Guaranteed last week and loved it.
ReplyDeleteI don't even know of Field Roast so at least you're not alone in not having them! I'll have to look the brand up...
DeleteI'm happy to hear the movie was good, particularly as I adore Aubrey Plaza. You might want to check your spelling of the movie though ;) xo
ReplyDeleteOh, the horror :S Thanks for pointing the error out.
DeleteWe spent most of the car ride home trying to work out where we'd seen Aubrey Plaza before. Eventually I looked her up and I think it was in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. She was fantastic in this at any rate and hopefully she'll turn up in more things.
Okay, I have to know what the initial spelling said....
DeleteIt wasn't anything exotic, simply two Rs in guaranteed!
DeleteAre you joking? YOU DON'T WATCH PARKS AND REC?! Girl. Get on that or we can no longer be friends.
DeleteWatching Parks and Recreation suddenly seems of utmost importance!
DeleteI have seen the Linda McCartney range in Thomas Dux and been curious, but never tried them. I do live the concept of an outdoor movie, but the only time I have been, it was a cold Melbourne night so not comfortable.
ReplyDeleteMmm, weather is a tricky thing to time for outdoor cinema! So many things can go wrong!
DeleteI haven't tried anything from her range but I can imagine her products would be very good quality. I love going to the outdoor cinema and usually when I do go, I'm less selective about what I see - it becomes more about the whole experience xx
ReplyDeleteThe experience was the important thing, you are exactly right. Even if the movie had been average I think I'd have enjoyed it (and this one was good, so it was doubly fun!).
DeleteWhat a cute setting for an outdoor film! We used to have some here in Canberra but even in summer you needed to take a blanket as it would be freezing by the end.
ReplyDeleteThat's normally how it is here too - albeit probably not as freezing as Canberra! I remember going to a different outdoor venue a few years back and being caught out with how cold it got. I think that's why we had ambitiously hoped for cool this time around, but of course this summmer is not behaving typically!
Deletehmmmm I've seen them in our local health food store but never tried them! I might have to sometime soon!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'd definitely recommend them!
DeleteSure sounds like a nice summer night! I've never been to an arts/film festival, but would love to go. The setting sounds perfect. I have to admit, I'm a little envious. Haha. I wonder if they sell those sausages in the states. I'm going to google it right now. :)
ReplyDeleteI wonder too now - I might have to google it myself out of curiousity!
DeleteDo you have outdoor films in your summer?
Yes, we do have outdoor films here. We also drive in theaters. Do you have drive ins in Australia?
DeleteThey don't sell Linda McCartney products here, but I wish they did! Looks like she has an amazing product line: www.lindamccartneyfoods.co.uk/chilled/
It is so unusual for Australia to have something America doesn't that I am sure you will get the products soon!
DeleteWe don't really have drive ins any more, sadly. We did when I was a child but my family never went, and by the time I was old enough to drive they had pretty much all shut down. I am sure there must still be some in other states, but not near me!
Ooh, I saw those sausages at the Green Edge when I was in Brisbane for a conference, so I bought a pack and ate them for breakfast in the mornings. It was a bit of a weird brekky, but they were really nice sausages :)
ReplyDeleteSometimes things need to be slotted in to whatever meal they can fit in :-) I'm glad you got a chance to try them!
DeleteI don't think we have those sausages here but I did pick up a Meatless Mondays cookbook written by the McCartneys and actually cooked something from it last night! I totally messed it up due to user error but I could see how if I had done it right, it would have been awesome.
ReplyDeleteYou'll have to do a repeat version :-)
DeleteOooh, the outdoor movie looks like so much fun! And I had no idea Linda McCartney had a line of vegetarian sausages, but I'd definitely try them. I wonder if they exist over here.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like no one in the US has tried them, so perhaps not? They're UK based originally but maybe they're branching out. She has a whole range of products, it's quite impressive!
DeleteI've never seen that brand but I really really love vegetarian snags...
ReplyDeleteI love that you do :-) Not many meat eaters seem to!
DeleteI can't stand vegie stuff that tastes like meat. I usually buy those chickpea sausages but they have been a bit dry the last few times. I hate the soy ones so I'm going to try and track these down. Bangers and mash!!
ReplyDeleteI've had those chickpea ones too :) I agree, they are a bit dry sometimes (and also a bit bland sometimes) but they're easy to cook and I like that they're not meat-like at all.
DeleteI'm not a big fake-meat person, myself. But I do love outdoor movies! I remember seeing a preview for this movie and though it looked really great--(i love Parks & Rec (which the main actress is from), and New Girl (which the main actor is from))--but I don't think it made it to the theaters in the states. Maybe it'll come soon!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen Parks & Rec but now I want to - I worked out Aubrey was in that and am guessing that's been her main role to date?
DeleteI hope it reaches you soon, it's not in mainstream theatres here but if you have any 'arty' ones it may well appear!
these look great! And I like your new header!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI just saw Safety Not Guaranteed! It was cute!
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried anything from the Linda McCartney line yet, but I've heard lots of good things and I really want to. I'm just having trouble tracking them down!
It sounds like they are a bit difficult to find in some places. Hopefully they'll turn up near you soon?!
DeleteI'm glad you liked Safety Not Guaranteed too :-)
I haven't seen those in stores around here, but they look awesome! And I love veggie sausages of all kinds. And what a lovely outdoor film festival, that would be totally fun.
ReplyDeleteIt really was - thanks Allysia!
DeleteI've never tried that brand of mock meats. I don't think I've seen them in the Midwest but remember seeing them when we were in London at Whole Foods. The next time I see them, I'll have to give them a try.
ReplyDeleteThe outdoor theater in Perth looks so fun! I've never been to an outdoor theater with seats like that, only drive-in theaters where you watch the movie in your car. Glad to hear it was enjoyable despite the heat!
I definitely recommend the range if you get a chance to try it :)
