D.C.'s Sticky Fingers vegan bakery

I mentioned that I wanted to give separate space to one of our Washington D.C. dinners, and I hope that with this post you will see why. In addition to Sweetgreen, Sticky Fingers Bakery (all vegan) and Pete's Apizza (vegan pizzas with Daiya cheese on offer) were on my list of 'to visit' places for D.C. food. We didn't end up making it to Pete's Apizza, a consequence of some delayed jet lag on my part and the fact that I really prefer my pizza cheeseless. We did, however, make it to Sticky Fingers. It was so good I wish we'd made it twice!

Sticky Fingers is located near the Columbia Heights metro station, which is only a 20 minute walk north of where we stayed. Whilst mostly a bakery, they also do brunch on weekends and burgers and salads until 8pm weeknights and 10pm Fridays and Saturdays. We visited on a Wednesday, so chose to take food away and eat back at our apartment.

On the bakery front, Sticky Fingers offers cupcakes galore, brownies, cookies, donuts (on certain days), and sticky buns. They have almond milk coffees, soy or coconut milk thick shakes, and a selection of packaged food that includes vegan marshmallows and vegan s'mores. My excitement was definitely not contained in this place.

For meals, there are five different burger options, ranging from a straightforward burger through to Texas, California, Asian and BBQ varieties (see the menu here!). They also have a vegan BLT, a sandwich with tempeh bacon, lettuce, tomato and Vegenaise, an Asian Salad, and a Power Salad. The 'meat' components are made with Beyond Meat, a US brand that claims to be the first plant-based protein to look, feel and taste like meat, and Gardein, which is the same brand as the meat-free BBQ wings I bought at Whole Foods.

Our selections.

I dithered between a burger and the Power Salad, but ended up going with the latter, with the sneaky plan of sharing a taste of Mr Bite's burger. It had kale, quinoa, hummus, avocado, cucumbers, tomato and sundried tomato flavour Beyond Meat pieces. It was all excellent.

The power salad. It was powerful!

Mr Bite chose the standard 'solo burger', which has a Gardein burger patty with lettuce, tomato and Vegenaise. He professed a desire for a similar burger to be available at home on a weekly basis, and on tasting it, I concurred. The patty may have been the best veggie burger I've tasted.

We couldn't, of course, visit Sticky Fingers without buying sweet items too. After more dithering, we went for the sticky buns for which they are renowned. I can make vegan cupcakes and brownies, but sticky buns are a more daunting affair - but one that Sticky Fingers pulls off with no trouble at all. We both agreed that the buns were, as with everything else, excellent.

Vegan sticky bun.

If you're ever in Washington D.C., visit Sticky Fingers Bakery. I don't think you'll regret it.

Sticky Fingers is at 1370 Park Road NW, Washington D.C., or see http://stickyfingersbakery.com/ .

Have you tried Beyond Meat or Gardein? Or do you have your own local vegan bakery?

  3. I'm not usually very enthused about salads but this one looks so good! It must have been a tough decision with so much fantastic food on offer. I'm impressed with the sticky bun, it looks awesome and would have been my choice too.

    1. American salads are a whole different ball game to Australian ones. Given I can bring home some of their processed food, I actually think the salads may be what I miss most when we leave! I think you would have liked the sticky bun too, it wasn't sickly sweet :-)

  5. I am LOVING your posts on the US and the food-adventures. They make me salivate, but they also make me want to pack my bags and begin a culinary adventure holiday :)

My only concern is that if I go over for a no-holds barred taste-everything-my-(eyes)-heart-desires food quest, I'll need an extra wide plane seat to travel back in :P

That solo burger looks amazingggg, and that's quite a testament to say it was possibly the 'best veggie burger' ever. That's a tough title to hold :) haha

    1. Oh, I am so glad you're enjoying them! And whilst I understand the fears about an extra wide plane seat, if you're in the big cities, you may also be doing lots of walking - which makes more room for more sticky buns ;)
