Loving this week {June 2013}

The 'loving'this week' posts are all about the little moments in your days and weeks that have tickled your heart.

After skipping over a 'loving this week' post for May (I was in pre-holiday work chaos, and just didn't get to doing one), I'm delighted to be back with a snapshot of what I'm loving at the moment.

This week, I'm loving vegan orange cake with (soy) cream cheese frosting. It's the same recipe as the orange cake I made earlier in the year, but with the addition of the orange zest. It tastes like orange this time. It's possible I liked the other one more (orange and I aren't super friendly in baked goods), but I'm still loving the simplicity of homemade cake with tea on a weekend afternoon.

I'm loving Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, another foray into science fiction reading. The book was on the 'book swap' shelf of our Daintree accommodation, and Mr Bite reported enjoying it when he read it some years ago. The story blends technology and an advanced computer programmed 'metaverse' with sociology, linguistics and religion. It's quite the read.

I'm loving carob kibbles, for a second time.

I'm loving chickpeas (nothing new there).

I'm loving Perth winter. Never let it be said that I don't proclaim my adoration of the seasons I do like as much as I proclaim my horror at the ones I don't!

Spot the rainbow

I'm loving my husband (nothing new there either!). This June marked 4 years since we started dating, and tomorrow marks 10 months since our wedding. It's hard to believe that 4 years ago I believed that I could only marry someone if we maintained separate houses. These days, and especially after 2 weeks on holiday together, a single work day sometimes seems like a long time to be apart.

Last but not least, I'm loving new running shoes. Details will come in my next Fitness Friday post (as will my experiences with orthotics), but I am delighted with my latest Brooks model and am looking forward to trying them out on my long runs over the coming weeks.

What are you loving this week?

  1. Hi Kari,

I think I've said it before, but orange cake is one of my favourites - how does the soy affect the icing taste wise though?
What's making me happy is people donating small and large to the Ride to Conquer Cancer. I'm 35% there, so that makes me happy (and glad now that I am helping)

    xx

    1. I don't notice the soy in this Liz, but I will admit to perhaps not being the best person to detect it given I have soy regularly :-) However, it retains that cream cheese 'tanginess', and Mr Bite doesn't comment on it being different to usual, so I'd say this is one non-dairy product that does a good job of resembling the real thing.

That is fantastic regarding your fund raising for the ride. Definitely something to be happy about!

  3. I'm adding Snow Crash to my Good Reads 'to read' list. I'm waiting for my new brooks shoes to arrive from the UK, I'm so hoping they come this week!

  5. Orange cake, I love it! Never made one, but it sounds pretty much like heaven. I love gratitude posts! Right now I am loving being in charge of my own schedule, and being back home to see all my old friends again. :)

  6. That cake sounds yummy!
Glad to hear you are loving your new Brooks shoes. I might be a bit biased, but I really love all things Brooks.

  8. Pat Farmer also wears Brooks. He said Asics don't work for him and give him injuries. I have been running in Asics and am now going to buy some Brooks. Thanks for your subtle recommendation xx

    1. Pat Farmer is certainly a good endorsement. Have you tried one of those specialist running stores that fit your shoes for you? It costs a bit more normally but I've found it very, very worthwhile...I used to pick on colour and these days I just trust their judgment entirely (that and podiatry recommendations anyway). When you're running up and down the store and they're examining your gait in great detail, it makes you feel happier about how good your shoes are for your feet!

  11. I'm loving wiggle.com, which I checked out recently after reading your post a while ago. Thanks! I have been running in my new, long-sleeve bright pink shirt. It has thumb holes in the sleeves, so I can pull them down over my cold hands :D

    1. Now I'm wondering if we have the same top! I have a long-sleeved pink Nike running one too, with bright sections down the sleeve, and thumb holes which are the best invention ever. I love it so much I wanted to order another one but couldn't find the same model on Wiggle when I looked again. I'm glad you're enjoying the site and your new purchase :-)

    2. Probalby not the same - mine is under armour, I think...

    3. I might check out that brand on Wiggle instead, given my model seems to have disappeared ;)

  12. Look at you all loved up :-) Love, love, love hearing of love stories. I still get a happy butterfly every time Mr Chocolate comes home from work.

(Sorry was a bit slow to link in this week, things got busy busy....thank you!)

  13. I love the irony that you have added the orange zest to the orange cake and decided it is better the way you made it the first time - it looks just so soft and lovely that I want a slice.

I am loving reading my book when I can - I think it is called Daughters of Mars by Thomas Keneally. I am still catching up on books from my mum and from our trip to scotland last year but the snow crash sounds interesting if I ever get through the piles.

    1. I think I've read some of Keneally's books and enjoyed them. I think you would like Snow Crash if you ever see it - and it's been around for a while so is likely to pop up in libraries and second hand shops - but like you I get a lot of my books from my Mum, which helps with cost and them coming to me, but means I often don't branch out beyond her stock!

  14. I did a big gym shop last week.. before the end of year sales. I didn't even think of new shoes though! I've got a couple of pairs of those super bendy Nikes .3 I think? I love your things you love... very similar to mine :)

  15. Oh, that paragraph about your husband.

    Also, carob nibbles! Yes please!

    1. I hope you get to try the nibbles one day, because I am so sure you'd love them as much as I do!
