A weekend

Cooler weather.

Consecutive days below 30'C. Overnight temperatures as low as 14'C. We can sleep with the windows open and the quilt on. And venture outside without having hot air scorch us. Perfect.

A new baby.

The first to a friend in 2012. What's more, the first to one of my school (vs. university / work) friends - and thus the first to a friend who is actually younger than me!

Surreal. And a beautiful little girl.

A trip to the local library.

Something I always love. And now I have travel books calling my name.

Work.

It's been many, many months since I've worked for any length of time on the weekend. But a nauseating To Do list hovers over me like a tidal wave about to break, and I suspect weekend work will be needed again before the month is out.

Things will improve after February, though, and I can get through one month. I just have to breathe. And swim if that tidal wave does crash.

Kale.

I thought it didn't exist near me. It turns out curly kale is at the fruit and vegetable markets I visit every week...they just usually sell out before Sunday.

I hope I like it after months of considering it beyond my reach!

What has your weekend involved?

  1. Are the travel books for traveling or for the potential out of country move?

  2. Sounds like a good weekend was had Kari, and any weekend that involves Lonely PLanet is a good one :-)
Sewing, walking, family get together, and belly rubs happening around here.

Hope your week is just as good, as your weekend.

    1. Sewing, walking, family get together and belly rubs sound quite divine - I hope the little one is enjoying the rubbing :)

  3. never seen curly kale - maybe I need to look harder - yesterday was stinking hot and today was hot and then cold - the cool change came as we headed to the pool but we still enjoyed our swim - glad the weather is pleasantly cool for you

    1. Isn't our summer weather odd these days? I'm sure it was more stable, and less extreme, when I was a child!

I'd never seen curly kale either, but then I hadn't seen any - it will be good to eventually compare types.

  4. Don't feel bad about your weather. We got buckets of snow here (up to me knees!) and my car got stuck. Luckily I was only a block away from my house.

    1. Gosh, that was lucky. There is a big part of me that would rather buckets of snow to overwhelming heat, but I can appreciate the practical downsides of it! I hope you're keeping warm.

  5. We had sunshine - actual summer like sunshine! Very exciting. That and blackberries made for a great weekend.

I need to get stuck into Lonely Planet too as I try to convince my other half that a longer holiday is the way to go.

    1. It's my other half that has a thing for longer holidays...he's definitely a 'work to live' kind of guy and holidays feature in his living! I hope you can convince your partner.

Enjoy your summer sunshine! I can appreciate that is quite exciting for you over in Canberra ;)

  6. That curly kale looks a lot like what I know of as endive. But maybe it's just a deceiving photo, or it's highly possible that I'm wrong, because I'm no kale expert!

Our weekend weather was the opposite - after a few cool, rainy days, it has cranked back up to baking temperature. As much as I love a good cuddle under the doona, I'm happy it is warm again. I felt like wearing jeans when it was about 30 degrees - how quickly we acclimatise!

    1. Well believe me, I'm no kale expert either! I just googled endive (I also have no experience with that) and they do look quite similar. It looks like endive may have slightly thinner leaves though? Or I'm just making up differences :)

30'C does seem cool after 40'C - you're so right about the acclimatising!

  7. If that tidal wave looms, just remember that no matter how panicky and stressful it seems, it's actually not life or death. The world doesn't rest on your workplace, and anyone acting like it is needs a good swift kick up the bum.

And yes, this is what I'm telling myself like a mantra right now (and for the next few months). I might even believe it sometime. ;)

Yay kale! I found it once at my farmers market but it was something like $6 a tiny bunch, plus a long drive (petrol!) to the markets and back. I hope you like it too!

P.S. I thought you meant the baby was called Surreal. :P

    1. Teehee, it may be me that needs a good swift kick up the bum, although even I appreciate it's not life or death. Just reputation or career doom...but only when I'm thinking catastrophically ;) I hope you can practice the same points and then we shall both survive the next few months and be intact for all manner of excellent adventures thereafter.

I had to laugh at the baby Surreal idea. That would definitely be surreal!
