I am linking this post in to Celia's monthly In My Kitchen event at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial.
In my kitchen, there is me! We survived our incredibly long journey home (1.5 hours to get from Manhattan to JFK airport; 3 hours at the airport; 11 hours on a plane; 2 hours at Dubai airport; 10 hours on a plane; 1 hour to clear passport control, customs, and get ourselves to actually home) and are back in Australia in body, if not fully in mind.
The last holiday photo, just before we disappeared through that A6 gate. |
In my kitchen, there is a Whole Foods bag I brought back with us. I filled it this morning when re-stocking on fruit and vegetables.
In my kitchen, there are also newly stocked dry legumes (chickpeas, lima / butter beans, black beans), nuts (raw almonds, pecans) and dried fruit (pears). Also some rice crackers and sriracha. I fell in love with sriracha while away - it burns in all the good ways.
Bulk food buys (except for the sauce). |
In my kitchen, there are some new socks. I found them in the gift shop of the Tenement Museum in New York, although they have no relation to the museum itself. They are going to be my favourite socks, just as soon as they make it off the washing line.
In my kitchen, there are products brought back from America. The chocolate will be reviewed in due course (and there is some more that didn't make it into the photo!). The packet middle left contains graham crackers.
In my kitchen, there is this new-to-Australia chocolate peanut butter. It makes me feel better about not bringing back nut butters along with the above (I was worried about Western Australian customs restrictions). It's made by an Australian company and there's also a peanut-coconut version.
In my kitchen, there are these flowers from my parents garden. They welcomed us home (thanks Mum!).
In my kitchen, our scratch map came off the wall so we could scratch off the U.S. and Canada. This was a Christmas present a few years back and it makes travel to new countries even more fun than normal (whilst I'd been to North America before, our system with the map is to only scratch countries we've both been to). If we can only get to Russia and Antarctica, then we'll have scratched a good portion!
In my kitchen, there is washing waiting to be hung out...and so I am heading there now.
What's happening in your kitchen this month?
I've enjoyed your posts about the American food adventures! :)
ReplyDeleteThe chocolate eats above have delicious recipes written all over them :P And those socks would make me chuckle no matter how many times I wore them hahah!
Mum just got back from her trip too and I inevitably had one question: what were the meals like? :P She was describing the macadamias in Hawaii on there stopover on the way back home. Mouth-watering!
I think the 'recipes' might involve opening the packets and putting the chocolate directly into my mouth ;) I hope your Mum enjoyed her trip too!
DeleteAbsolutely loved it, she is adamant I'll love it too :)
DeleteYou'll just have to visit then ;)
DeleteLove those socks!!! I like buying and trying different foods overseas - the only catch is when you find something you love and you know you can't buy it here.
ReplyDeleteOh, I know! Thus why I brought quite a bit back with me ;)
DeleteWelcome back! And love the socks :) have enjoyed hearing about your adventures!
ReplyDeleteThank you Kate!
DeleteI'm glad you made it home safely! Wow..what a journey! I'm sure it was all worth it though, right? ;). I'm soo glad you discovered sriracha! That bottle won't last long hehe. It's like ketchup for us. Ooh but the combination of the two = amazing! Spicy ketchup..
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your travels with us! I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Now get some rest! You always need a vacation after a vacation ;)
The journey was definitely worth it :-) And I am yet to try sriracha with ketchup but now I will definitely be doing so!!
DeleteWelcome home - it must be nice to have cool socks and yummy foods to remind you of your holiday. I saw the new nut butter range and was interested in trying some but am yet to do so. I am also curious about sriracha - I gather your purchase is from the US. (admittedly I am still to open a bottle of hot sauce to try so it probably should be down my list to try)
ReplyDeleteI actually bought the sriracha here - I was worried about exploding bottles or similar if I tried to bring some back (it's the sort of thing you really wouldn't want all over the inside of your suitcase!). I found it at the market stall that I get my bulk buy foods from, and I imagine it would be in most Asian stores too. I haven't tried hot sauce either yet so I will have to get some of that too to compare :-)
DeleteThose sock, really good.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are home and a journey to talk about. You love sriracha, isn't it the best?
It is! Almost as good as my socks ;)
DeleteThose socks are hilarious!
ReplyDeleteI love fun socks- so have drawers filled with them.
Thanks for sharing- it is fun to travel and try new and different foods and brands, isn't it?
I don't have enough fun socks I think - I am going to have to expand my collection! And travel is a wonderful thing indeed, I feel very privileged to have squeezed so much in of late.
DeleteAaahahaha travel scratch map!! If only it were an advent calendar.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Good choices with the chocs. You chose two of my favourite flavours from Chuao and Chocolove.
Oh, excellent (re. the chocolates)! And now I want a travel scratch map advent calendar very much indeed. I think you should patent the idea :-)
Deletehey Kari, great post!! Loving the socks and those American chocolate bars look mouth-watering! Thanks for the tour x
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed it Lisa - thanks!
DeleteIt always feels good to get back to regular eating after a trip!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely - although I have to say that I could probably make American food part of regular eating with ease :-)
DeleteI'd love one of those scratch maps. They look like a really good idea. I buy a lot of Mayvers products so I'm sure that peanut butter will be awesome. Getting home seemed like such a route-march. I do hope you're recovering well xx
ReplyDeleteThe maps are really great - and make lovely gifts! Ours is by a company called Luckies and you can probably order them online if you search. We're recovering fairly well from the travel, thank you!
DeleteHi Kari,
ReplyDeleteIn my kitchen is just me too! I'm only just home from Asia and there is no food in my kitchen :0!
I hope you had an amazing holiday, it sounded the best :)
Thanks so much - and you too! I also hope you get some food, fast ;)
Deletegood luck with the washing - it is always horrible after trips isn't it? and welcome home as well! i also always bring back loads of food from trips..when really i could probably find them here is well..there is just something about shopping on holidays :)
ReplyDeleteThere is! And yes, the washing is just incredible - so many clothes from such relatively small cases! Fortunately we're all washed and mostly ironed now :-)
DeleteI'm a peanut butter fiend - it only comes second to honey and butter as my absolute favourite toast topping. Needless to say, I love the look of that peanut butter - I'll have to keep an eye out for it :)
ReplyDeleteI'm a peanut butter fiend too, and actually like it with honey, so we'd probably get along well if sharing toast ;) I hope you find this to give it a try!
DeleteI've just discovered Sriracha sauce as well! New find at Costco, and my eldest son is already dousing every meal with it! :) The chocolate peanut butter is intriguing - does it taste a bit like nutella? Sounds like you had a wonderful trip! :)
ReplyDeleteMy brother also adores it - I bought him a bottle when I found mine as my poor mother is always being hounded to buy more and it isn't that common yet! The peanut butter is actually quite different to nutella as it isn't sweetened - just peanuts and cacao are in the ingredient list, so it's very peanutty and not quite as-eat-me-all-up-NOW as nutella ;)
DeleteCan I please live in your kitchen? I love your shops!
ReplyDeleteSome of them are American ones I think ;)
Deletehehehe love those socks :-)
ReplyDeleteLots of goodies to be found in your kitchen dear lady.
Thank you B!
DeleteSounds like you had quite the journey to get home! I have never had to travel for that long, but it sounds exhausting. I bet you and Mr. Bite were thrilled to be home. :-)
ReplyDeleteExhausting is right, but it was worth it :-) We were glad to get home though!
DeleteIt must be lovely to be back in your kitchen again even though your trip sounded like such a great one! I love that travel map, what a fun concept! Sriracha is a wonderful sauce, it was forgotten around here for a while while we delved into other hot sauces but has been regaining popularity recently.
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking of you whilst using it actually, because I know you love spicy things :-) It makes bland go to brilliant in one easy step!
DeleteWelcome home! It's always nice to be back even though when you're on vacation you never want it to end!
ReplyDeleteI really need to get a pair of those socks for my daughter...she's slightly OCD but has a great sense of humour.
And..YES! I missed graham crackers SO MUCH when we lived in Australia. I really did. It took me a long time to figure out what to make cheesecake bases with LOL.
Now I can understand why! They are definitely not quite like any of the biscuits / cookies we have in Australia. And I hope you can get some similar socks for your daughter - they are very fun ;)
DeleteLOVE the socks! Haha. And I sure do love sriracha. Glad you're safe and sound back in Australia. :)
ReplyDeleteThat map is such a cute idea! Love it. Also, I can't wait for those chocolate reviews. I've been craving dark chocolate lately. I even had an avocado, chocolate, and walnut mousse/smoothie for dinner tonight. It was super yummy (and healthy!)
Oh, that sounds fantastic!! I want that right now :D
DeleteKari, you must be exhausted so I'll keep this short. Sriracha and socks -- love 'em! Wonderful IMK post!
ReplyDeleteG'day Your socks rock, true! :)
ReplyDeletePeanut-coconut version...YUM...wish could come through the screen and try some now too!
Cheers! Joanne

Thanks Joanne :)
DeleteI didn't know about Mayvers making those butters - they sound delicious so I'll be looking out for them next time I go shopping. Thanks for the tip. I've also added the Tennement Museum to my list for when we head to NYC next year. Great post!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely keep an eye out for the nut butters - and how exciting about your upcoming NY trip! The Tennement Museum is well worth visiting so I hope you enjoy it :)
