I am linking this into cityhippyfarmgirl's 'loving this week' post for February. Her 'loving' posts are about the little moments in your days and weeks that have tickled your heart.
For February, I am focusing on some easy food combinations that I am loving a whole lot right now.
Quinoa with apple stewed in vanilla and cardamom. Sometimes with berries too.
This is top of the list for a reason. I love it cold, at any time of day.
Also vanilla soy ice cream with carob powder mixed through.
In truth, vanilla soy ice cream is going pretty well right now, however it comes.
And on the topic of tahini, it turns out that fig jam and tahini is an amazing combination, even for someone who doesn't usually eat jam. When spread on crackers or dolloped on oats, wonderful things happen.
Smoothies with cereal sprinkled atop.
If you took away my cooking rights for a week (and let me pre-cook quinoa, puy lentils and sweet potato...), I might just eat these in constant rotation.

Yum! They all look so delicious.
ReplyDeleteI really love sweet potato with lentils too :-)
And having quinoa as a sweet dish like breakfast is my favourite way :-)
This is the first time I have had quinoa as a non-savoury dish (or for breakfast)! I am definitely a convert now :-)
DeleteEveryhing looks yummy! I had the craziest thing the other day...On the bottom, brown rice. Then I added chicken and sweet potatoes with a tbls of bbq sauce. Sounds gross, but it was SO good!
ReplyDeleteI love mixing my oatmeal and almont butter.....a lot!
Sometimes the things that initially sound good are the best :-) And actually, that doesn't sound gross at all! I think I'd love the same mix with tofu instead of chicken :P
DeleteI need to try your sweet potato combos! They sound super delicious.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joanne :) They are that, and also super simple, which makes me very happy indeed!
DeleteI would like to try the fig jam with the tahini. You've got me intrigued. I've never tried that combination before xx
ReplyDeleteIt comes highly recommended, Charlie!
DeleteKari any time you were east side and wanted to hang out together, I think we would eat just fine. Everything you've just listed is delicious :-) Yesterday I was eating fig jam and macadamia butter on crackers, but had originally reached for the tahini (my hand got distracted!) Went to a raw vegan cafe on the weekend too, sooo good.
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up!
I need another conference in your neighbourhood! I think your hand knew just what it was doing when it reached for the macadamia butter - I am in love with that jam combination without even trying it myself! I'm also loving your raw vegan cafe jaunts ;)
DeleteYum! Those tahini combinations sound awesome. I've never liked tahini much on it's own, but it seems to go well will a lot of different ingredients. I have sweet potatoes in the house, so I think that I may have to try that combo tonight. Your post also made me really want soy ice cream. A run to the store may be in my very near future. :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't used to like tahini either, but I've found that the unhulled variety tastes really different (and a lot nicer, to me) than the hulled sort. It does also go nicely with other things, and I probably use it that way more often than not (unlike nut butters, which seem to jump from the jar to my mouth with little interference en route!).
DeleteI hope you enjoyed your ice cream, if you got it ;)
I did enjoy the ice cream! Haha.
Deletethis all looks like the food of someone experiencing very hot weather - today has turned unexpectedly cold so I think warm food is in order but still, I want that sweet potato and puy lentils dish for my lunch right now! Cold quinoa with fruit sounds odd but might have to try it when I next have some leftovers (if I don't tip half the tub of it over the floor as happened recently!!!)
ReplyDeleteI am convinced our cool weather is just around the corner so perhaps in March I'll have more warming dishes to share :-) The cold quinoa with fruit does sound very odd, but I promise it is remarkably good! You could try it warm if you aren't convinced though - although keeping it off the flood would be a good first step! I imagine cooked quinoa would be incredibly hard to clean up too (just the sort of time you want a dog...).
Deleteyour quinoa mixture looks great! so creative!
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic list. I *love* the addition of cardamom to sweet things, I need to do that more often.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I need to thank you for helping me manifest more dark chocolate into my life. I commented on your chocolate bar post that I didn't find many chocolate bars over 75%, but I swear I went to the store that night to satisfy my craving, and there in front of me were a great selection of 85% bars that I'm almost certain weren't there before! You helped me will them into the my local co-op, I'm convinced. ; )
I need to do it (add cardamom) more often too!
DeleteI am delighted with your dark chocolate find! What beautiful timing, and perhaps a very strong will ;)
This post is making me hungry - everything looks so good!
ReplyDeleteThese sorts of foods make me hungry too - I could eat them pretty well constantly :-)
DeleteGreat food combinations, you must be very healthy. I have to confess a complete addition to chocolate over 60% upwards or what ever is in the coolroom at work ( we distribute Amedei chocolate from Italy)
ReplyDeleteOh! What a great place to work!!
DeleteMan I LOVE all your eats/combinations.... totally agree with the fig/tahini combo. One of my favourite "bowls of joy" is vanilla soy ice cream drizzled with tahini with chopped dried figs, walnuts and banana..... SO GOOD!
ReplyDeleteWe must be on the same wave length - just finished a bowl of quinoa and stewed apple ;)
That ice cream bowl sounds wonderful! I need to get some dried figs and try it; yum.
DeleteAnd the quinoa wave length we are on is a very good one ;)
Mmmm I LIVE for smoothies with cereal sprinkled on top- dessert for breakfast :)
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it took me so long to catch on!
DeleteCereal on top of smoothies? What a Very Good Idea.
ReplyDeleteI'd highly recommend it :)
