Foods I like coming home to

There are wonderful things about being on holiday.

And there are some wonderful things about getting home again.

Even when the time away has been delightful, even if one doesn't want the holiday to end, there are things about home that are just better. Your own bed and pillow. The bathroom you know and the shower that has the right water pressure. A cupboard full of clean clothes.

Also, of course, food things.

Here's what I'm enjoying again this week.

Yoghurt. Since starting to make my own, I've found that there are very few commercial varieties I will bother to eat.

It's been nice getting back in to the version I love this week.

After all, doesn't this bowl just invite you in?

It calls out to me, that is for sure!

Cereal. I like variety in my cereals. Having to take just one cereal away with me is always challenging. This week I'm particularly enjoying sultana bran, with coconut milk (also missed when away), and puffed kamut (plain, for snacking on). Plus oats, of course, for the yoghurt :)

Chocolate. No explanation needed I suspect. At home, I always have Lindt Excellence dark chocolate blocks. I was hit with a huge craving for Lindt mid-way through last week that I suspect highlights just how much I enjoy this form of indulgence when I'm home!

Vegetables. Oh goodness me, vegetables. I never seem to get enough on holidays, or at least not enough of the non-salad sort. I've been enjoying them steamed, raw, and in cooked dishes.

The fact that I can enjoy steamed carrot and broccoli as much as chocolate probably says something odd about me, but post-holiday, that seems to be how it is.

A selection of hot drinks. I don't drink much tea on holiday but I enjoy it at home (and particularly at work).

I'm still enjoying many of these teas

I also like knowing how my coffee will turn out, which seems to be a challenging feat when away.

What about you - what foods do you most miss when away?
And more generally, what are you enjoying this week?

    1. Well, I use the EasiYo containers and thermos, so it's pretty easy :) But very rewarding nonetheless!

  2. I usually feel a bit sad on the way home from a holiday but that goes away as soon as I'm back in my own kitchen and bed. I'm really missing loads of cooked vegetables by the end of holidays as I never feel like I am getting enough whilst away. And tofu can be difficult to source in some places so I'm always craving that too.

    1. I get the sadness too. It's even more of a reason to focus on loved foods :) Normally I also miss tofu, but oddly I didn't this time. Perhaps a week away from it wasn't long enough to induce tofu nostalgia!

  3. Vegetables, oatbran, and peanut butter. But most of all, my shower. Although less of that since moving out in 2010, because my current shower pressure is kinda lame. :P

    1. I appropriated two individual serve peanut butter trips on this trip, from the Geraldton Dome cafe :P I thought of you whilst doing it, too. (Although that sounds far creepier than I mean it to. And please don't think you're inspiring me to crime, because I always appropriate peanut butter sachets from Dome when I can. I figure it's fair trade for the $4.50 coffee. I just thought of you because of the peanut butter.)

At least your shower head is predictable, even if not perfect. So many showers away are oddly temperamental, and alternatively scald and freeze me, or shoot water and then stop on me. Quite the challenge!

    2. This is so far from creepy; you have delighted my soul. I still am so overwhelemed and honoured when people actually think of me not just when reading my blog. It's amazing.

  4. All of these foods sound pretty good for me. I had raw chocolate for the first time on the weekend - it was delicious!

  5. There is nothing like your own shower and bed when getting home from holidays - foodwise I really miss vegetables and cooking in my own kitchen. It really shouldn't be so hard to buy vegetables when out and about but generally I find that there are very few places I can buy a meal with lots of vegetables cooked the way I like them (am I fussy or strange?)

    1. Well, whatever you are, I'm it too :) I think we're neither fussy or strange, but rather too few places offer vegetables in sufficient quantities and prepared well!

  7. Hi! I'm a fellow #SweatPink Ambassador.
I just started adding rolled oats (uncooked) to my yogurt, and I love the texture (and fiber) that it adds.

There is something quite magical about uncooked rolled oats and yoghurt. And it's so versatile!

    1. Thanks Brandi, it's great to meet you (electronically at least) :)

  10. I always miss weetbix like crazy. Such a simple thing but I always find that simple, healthy breakfasts are really hard to get. And I totally agree about vegetables. I remember staying at a hostel in Bolivia and my friends and I nearly did cartwheels when we found they had broccoli on the menu. And nothing beats your own bed, your own shower and doing your own washing after a long trip!

    1. Washing! Yes, definitely that too :) And washing in your own washing machine, rather than a laundromat or something.

I took weetbix on this trip :-)

  11. Coffee and tea is a big one for me, too. Buying coffee out is expensive and the stuff supplied in hotel rooms and hotel breakfasts is usually not very good!

Speaking of coffee.. that's what I've been enjoying this week. Twice a day, every day!

  12. I think I definitely miss the ability to cook my own food and sleep in my own bed. There's something so comforting about your own sheets and pillows. I'm glad you had a wonderful holiday but glad you're happy to be home too xx
