I am linking this in to the monthly In My Kitchen event, hosted by Maureen of The Orgasmic Chef.
Happy April!
In my kitchen this month, there are signs of a birthday - Mr Bite's to be precise. I made his usual chocolate mudcake, which is as rich and fudgy as ever. He is happily working his way through it and I've been equally happy to help him out by eating a few slices myself (it is vegan).
I was pleased to be able to fill a vase of birthday flowers from our own garden. It is a huge novelty to me to be able to pick daffodils and other spring bulbs from my own back garden (they aren't flowers that grow readily in Australia). It is obviously a novelty to Mr Bite too, as he didn't realise they were homegrown until I told him!
Mr Bite was also welcomed on his birthday by a new Labrador puppy...of the non-living sort. This particularly puppy is a plant holder and I filled it with parsley. It has since moved outside, but is still visible from the kitchen.
On non-birthday matters, my kitchen still features some of my Christmas chocolate. Amazing, I know! I pictured this Doisy & Dam block after Christmas, but wanted to showcase it again now that I've tried it. It is a delicious dark block with generous ginger and hemp seed pieces studded throughout. The chilli kick is impressive too!
I am the proud owner of a discounted 14p pack of Sainsbury's basics teacakes. That is 3.5p per teacake! These packs are fairly cheap anyway but I bought them on the day of expiry, resulting in the further mark down. They reheat fine from the freezer so I was pleased to find the bargain.
My kitchen also features a new Weetabix cereal, which is nothing like traditional Weetabix except for the inclusion of wheat.
The 'crunch' pieces are marketed as being high in protein, and they do provide a little more protein than regular Weetabix (6g vs. 4g per serve), and about twice as much as a bowl of Sultana Bran (which gives 3g). Importantly, they also taste good - sort of malty, and enjoyable for breakfast or snacking. They're not as hearty as porridge or oats, but fun for a change.
Hi Kari:)
ReplyDeleteA celebration, flowers and lots of tasty snacks make a very nice kitchen celebration indeed! How exciting to be able to pick your very own flowers. I sure wish I would have picked some before the snow fell yesterday. Alas, a few more weeks.
Thank you so much for sharing your kitchen tidbits with us Kari. I joined IMK for the first time this month too and it was such fun!!!
Thanks for sharing, Kari...
Snow! You definitely need some spring weather!
DeleteI'm glad you participated this month too Louise :-)
Finally had sunshine today Kari, thanks for sending it our way:)
DeleteI really enjoyed IMK. I met so many wonderful peole. I will surely be doing it again...
beautiful flowers! I was sorry to see one last dying-off rose in my garden yesterday and I would love some happy flowers like yours. Great bargain on those teacakes!
ReplyDeleteHopefully the cooler weather you're pleased to welcome will offset the end of the roses ;)
DeleteI love a good markdown. My freezer is full of delicious marked down treats, and Mr Fork always laughs at me for beelining toward them. Happy birthday to Mr Bite - the cake looks delightful.
ReplyDeleteI love your flowers and the parsley filled lab... it's so lovely having your own space to grow things :)
Thanks Lisa and I would love to compare freezers ;)
DeleteHappy Birthday Mr. Bite!
ReplyDeleteHow nice of you to make a cake for him =)
I like the puppy plant holder - that is quite adorable ;)
Blueberry & vanilla ricecakes sound different than the regular, boring flavours.
What a fun kitchen!
Mr Bite's cake looks delicious - what is on top? and love the parsley puppy - the sainsbury's tea cakes are a bargain and I would love them toasted too. Your flower bunch is impressive. And I was looking at weetbix just today and marvelling at all the different types of them that are now available - though not sure they come in tubes here.
ReplyDeleteThe top is crumbled digestive biscuits and edible gold sprinkles!
DeleteWeetabix have definitely expanded over the years. I'm not sure I always approve - the original are perhaps the best - but clearly I am one of the people they market towards!
A Labrador plant pot? That might be as close to getting a dog as I might get at the moment :(
ReplyDeleteUs too!
DeleteThe cake would be delicious!! You can't go wrong with chocolate mud cake. Love the flowers too xx
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing
